Automatic Minting FAQ

Modified on: Thu, 29 Aug, 2024 at 10:22 PM

Automatic Minting is the act of registering a domain on the blockchain at the time of purchase. As of December 2022, all domains will be minted chain after purchase. Domains purchased prior to July 2024 that were not claim to a self-custodial wallet will be minted to a vault address where you can claim your domains from. The vault simply allows for domain storage only, not management.

As of July 2024, when you create an Unstoppable account, we'll generate a new Unstoppable Lite Wallet for you and mint all domains directly to this address for you if you have not set a designated minting wallet of your own. You can set up the Lite wallet and manage your domains using this wallet if you wish to do so. You do not have to set up the Lite wallet and can directly claim to your own wallet instead. You can transfer your domains out to your own self-custodial wallet at any time if you would prefer to use your own wallet.

What’s happening?

We’re updating the way we mint domains. All domains will be minted at the time of purchase by default and will exist onchain. Now, when you create an Unstoppable account, we'll generate a new wallet address for you, mint all domains directly to this address and let you transfer these out to a personal self-custodial wallet at any time.

If you haven’t yet minted your domain to your own wallet and take no action now, you can still transfer your domain to your wallet at any time.

Why are you doing this?

We designed Unstoppable to be usable for everyone – even people new to Web3 – which is why we allow people to buy a domain without needing a wallet of their own. This no-wallet approach is vital in providing an on-ramp to Web3, but it also means that there are a huge number of domains that have been purchased but not yet minted.

This change should be largely invisible to Unstoppable domain owners and their user experience, but since onchain data is public, we wanted to give you a heads-up on what's happening.

How do I transfer my domain to my wallet?

You can move your domain to your self-custodial wallet by following this guide here: How to Claim Your Domain. However, if you already set-up your Lite wallet, you will need to follow our Transfer Guide here, specifically the section titled: "Transfer a Domain held in Lite Wallet using ud.me".

I don’t have a wallet of my own. What about me?

By default, domains will be automatically minted to your new Unstoppable Lite Wallet. If you’d prefer to transfer your domain to your own self-custodial crypto wallet, simply create a wallet with your preferred wallet provider if you have not already and connect the wallet to your Unstoppable account

What if I have multiple wallets?

Your domain will be minted automatically to your minting wallet you set for your account. If you have not designated a minting wallet, the domains will mint to your Unstoppable Lite Wallet by default once purchased and waiting to be transferred into your chosen wallet.

If you have multiple wallets connected to your UD account and are unsure which wallet you would like to hold your domain, you’ll be able to choose which wallet to mint to during the minting flow!

What if I don’t want a third-party wallet to custody my domain?

The automatic minting of domains is important for both security and utility reasons. Previously, we held unminted domains in UD’s database which limited the improvements we made to the registry. Moving to an onchain database means more transparency, functionality and security.

Your domain is still 100% yours for life from purchase! UD will never make changes or take back ownership of your domain. We recommend transferring your domain to your self-custodial wallet as soon as possible so you can start getting the most out of your web3 domain!

Web2 domains such as .com domains can be detokenized at any time so you do not have to manage your domain using a wallet. You can see the detokenization process here.

I’ve moved my domain to a self-custodial wallet, now what can I do?

Congratulations! Your domain can now be managed 100% by your wallet and you can explore all that UD domains have to offer! Check out our User Guide on everything you can do with your domain and begin to build your digital identity!
