When a domain registered through Unstoppable Domains expires and isn't renewed during the grace period, it may be listed in our Expired Auctions marketplace — giving anyone a chance to bid on and acquire it. This article explains how the process works for both buyers and the original registrant.
When does a domain go to auction?
After a domain's grace period ends without renewal, it enters the expired auction phase.
During this time:
- The domain is listed on the Unstoppable Domains marketplace under Auctions → Expired
- The domain is also listed on partner auction platforms
The original registrant can still renew during the grace period, up until the point a bid is placed. See How to Renew Your Domain for full details on the grace period and renewals.
What happens once a bid is placed
Once any bid is placed on an expired domain:
- The original registrant can no longer renew the domain — the renewal option is permanently removed
- Outbound transfers on the domain are disabled for the duration of the auction
- The auction continues until it closes, at which point the highest bidder wins
This is consistent with how major registrars handle expired auctions — the act of bidding signals that a third party has a legitimate claim, and the registrant's recovery window closes at that point.
How to bid on an expired domain
- Go to the Expired Auctions marketplace

- Search or browse available domains — you can filter by TLD, age, character count, revenue history, and more

- Click on a domain to view its auction details, current bid, and time remaining

- Place a bid. Your bid amount is your maximum proxy bid — the system will bid on your behalf up to that amount

- If you're outbid, you'll receive a notification and can choose to bid again
- When the auction closes, the winner is charged and the domain is transferred to their account automatically
Paying for a won auction
When you win an auction:
- The cost is charged to your Account Balance
- If this brings your balance below zero (overdraft), you have 7 days to settle the negative balance before account restrictions apply
- A dashboard banner with a countdown timer will appear to remind you of the deadline
See Account Locks for Unpaid Backorder and Auction Dues for full details on what happens if the balance isn't cleared in time.
For the original registrant: can I get my domain back?
If your domain is in an active expired auction and no bids have been placed, you can still renew it from your dashboard — act quickly, as the window closes the moment any bid is placed.
If a bid has already been placed, the domain can no longer be recovered through renewal. If you believe your domain entered auction in error, contact our support team.
Frequently asked questions
How long do expired auctions run?
Auction duration is set by the auction platform and may vary by domain. The end time is displayed on each auction listing page.
Will I be notified if I'm outbid?
Yes, you'll receive an email and in-app notification when you've been outbid.
Can I watch a domain without bidding?
Yes, you can add domains to your watchlist from the auction listing page to track activity without placing a bid.
What happens if no one bids on an expired domain?
If a domain receives no bids by the auction close, it proceeds toward deletion (pending delete). It may then become available for backorder.
Can I backorder a domain that's currently in auction?
No. Domains actively in an expired auction are not eligible for backorder. Once the domain drops (if it goes unbid), it may become available to backorder.
