TABLE OF CONTENTS

UP.io is a next-generation self-custody wallet that gives you full control over your digital assets on any device. Built with advanced Multi-Party Computation (MPC) technology, it ensures top-tier security and ease of use while eliminating the need for traditional private keys or seed phrases. Instead, users simply log in with their email and password, making secure self-custody more accessible than ever.

What is Self Custody?

A self custody wallet means that movement of funds or any other transactions may not occur without the user's direct consent. The user has ownership and control over their digital assets in a self custody wallet. The ability to have self custody of digital assets is an important tenant of financial freedom.

Self-custody also means you have full responsibility to manage the private key of your wallet. With UP.io, your password is your key, and it must always be protected and never lost. Losing access to your password will result in irreversible loss of your assets. It is highly recommended that you opt into the UP.io Emergency Backup to ensure that you can always set a new password if you forget it. To see how to request an emergency backup, click here.

Custodial Wallets

You may also see wallets in the industry referred to as custodial wallets, which indicates that the service offering the wallet holds the secret keys and can act on behalf of user. For example, crypto exchanges like Coinbase and Binance offer custodial wallets to hold user funds. Another example of a custodial wallet is on Unstoppable Domains, where a custodial wallet is used to store and easily manage domains.

In most cases where services offer a custodial wallet, it is to simplify the user experience for new users. However, reputable services like those mentioned above always offer the ability to transfer digital assets to a self custody wallet where full ownership is possible.

Where can I use UP.io?

UP.io is available in multiple application formats. It's currently available on the web, as a browser extension in addition to iOS and Android mobile apps. More information can be found in the installation article.

How Does UP.io Work?

UP.io replaces traditional single-point private keys with a distributed signature scheme, leveraging MPC cryptography. Instead of requiring users to manage a private key or seed phrase, UP.io utilizes a password-based authentication system.

When you sign a transaction using UP.io:

  1. Password-Based Authentication – Users log in securely using their email and password.
  2. Key Shares Are Computed Separately – Instead of a single private key, multiple cryptographic key shares are generated and stored separately.
  3. Multi-Party Computation (MPC) Generates the Signature – All key shares participate in signing the transaction, without ever being combined in one place.
  4. Secure Execution – This process ensures that no single entity, including UP.io, ever has full access to your key, reducing the risk of hacks and theft.

Key Features of UP.io

Full Self-Custody

  • Ownership — UP.io provides 100% user-controlled asset management.

  • No third-party access — only you control and approve transactions.

  • No private keys or seed phrases — users authenticate with a simple email and password.

MPC-Powered Security

  • No Single Point of Failure – Private keys are replaced with cryptographic shares and never exist in full form at any moment.

  • Distributed MPC Signing Process – Multiple key shares are required for authentication, meaning a hacker would need access to multiple secured components.

  • Tamper-Resistant Design – Even if one key share is compromised, it cannot be used alone to sign transactions.

 Multi-Chain Compatibility

  • UP.io supports major blockchain networks, including:

    • Ethereum

    • Polygon

    • Base

    • Solana

    • Bitcoin

Seamless Backup & Recovery

  • Secure Account Recovery – Users can regain access by using their emergency backup to set a new password, eliminating the need for seed phrases.

Web3 Integration

  • Easily connect UP.io to DeFi applications, NFT marketplaces, and dApps for a seamless Web3 experience.

  • Browser and mobile-friendly, available on iOS and Android.

What is MPC?

MPC, or Multi-Party Computation, is a cryptographic protocol that allows multiple parties to jointly compute a function over their individual data while keeping that data private. Each party holds a piece of information, which is kept hidden from the other parties. These pieces are used in a collaborative process to compute the desired outcome. It involves multiple rounds of communication and computation to ensure a correct result and to maintain privacy. No single party ever has access to the entire dataset, ensuring that each participant's private information is kept confidential. Learn more

Why are my investments safer with MPC technology?

UP.io is powered by Fireblocks’ Non-Custodial Wallet (NCW) which uses a distributed signature scheme. One part of the signature scheme lives on your device (your private key) and the second part of the signature scheme is kept secure with Fireblocks (their private key).  In order to complete a transaction, such as transferring funds, both pieces of data are needed to allow the transaction to happen. MPC ensures that Fireblocks will never know your private data and vice versa. Since no single party will ever have the whole dataset, there isn’t a single point of failure for an attacker to gain access to a full key. Your Unstoppable Lite Wallet password gives you access to your private key, which is why it is important to always protect it and never lose it. Learn more

Important Note: Unstoppable Domains does not have access to any UP.io passwords, and cannot access your wallet.

Backup and Recovery

Traditional self-custody wallets come with the risk of irreversible lockout if the user loses their keys. UP.io provides a unique solution to this problem, called a emergency backup. Your emergency backup enables you to set a new password should you forget it. An emergency backup can optionally be created when setting up your UP.io wallet, and you can also request a new one whenever you are signed in to your wallet.

After a emergency backup is used to set a new password, a new backup will be emailed to you should you forget your password again. The previous backup cannot be reused. Each time a new emergency backup is created, the previous one is invalidated as a security precaution. The emergency backup has no expiration.

Important Note: If you do not have a emergency backup and you forget your password, there will be no way for Unstoppable Domains to recover access. Unstoppable Domains does not store your password.

Supported Tokens

The current supported blockchain networks are Bitcoin, Solana, Ethereum, Base and Polygon. Do not send tokens from other blockchains to your wallet or you will lose access to them and not be able to transfer them out. Support for additional blockchains will come in the future.
