What Is the 60-Day Transfer Lock?

Modified on: Thu, 16 Oct, 2025 at 6:00 PM

When a new domain is registered, ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) requires that a 60-day transfer lock be applied. This lock prevents the domain from being transferred to another registrar during that period.

ICANN’s Role

ICANN is the global organization that oversees the domain name system (DNS). It sets the policies that registrars, like Unstoppable Domains, must follow to ensure security and stability across the internet.

When the Lock Applies

At Unstoppable Domains, the 60-day transfer lock only applies to new domain registrations.

Other registrars may also apply a 60-day lock in additional cases, such as:

  • When a domain is transferred in from another registrar

  • When the WHOIS registrant contact information (name, organization, or email) is updated

Unstoppable Domains does not apply the lock in those additional cases. Only new registrations receive the initial 60-day lock.

Account Pushes and the Lock

If a domain is pushed (transferred) to another Unstoppable Domains account. the original 60-day lock period still applies — but it does not reset. The domain will continue counting down from the original registration date.

To learn how to push a domain to another account please see this guide.

Example

If example.com was registered on August 1st, the 60-day transfer lock would remain in effect until September 30th. After that date, the domain could be transferred to another registrar.
