Upcoming changes to gas fees

Modified on: Thu, 18 Nov, 2021 at 10:09 AM

After Phase 1 of the Layer 2 solution is implemented on November 15th, minting Ethereum-based domains to the Polygon will be free of charge for users. We will be paying the MATIC fees on behalf of our domain holders. Furthermore, we will be releasing Phase 2 by the end of November, which will enable domain management on Layer 2 and we will be covering the fees for updating domain records as well.

What if my domains are already minted on Layer 1 (Ethereum)?

If you have already minted domains to Layer 1 and do not proceed to bridge your domain over to Layer 2 (Polygon), you will be required to continue paying gas fees for domain management. If you wish to update your domain records free of charge, you will need to bridge your domains over to the Polygon network. For this, we will also be implementing a bridge between Layer 1 and Layer 2 throughout December to February. We will not be covering the fees related to bridging, however, we will cover the fees for domain management after bridging to Layer 2.

Will I be able to move my domains from Layer 2 (Polygon) to Layer 1 (Ethereum)?

If you would like to move your domain to Layer 1 after minting it to Layer 2, you may use the bridge we will be implementing by end of Q1 2022. in order to do so. Please note that we will not be covering the fees related to bridging your domain. It is worth noting, however, that many of the important domain management features will remain available on Layer 2 with the added benefit of not being required to pay gas fees for updating your domain records.
