What are Web3 Domains?

Web3 domains like .crypto, .nft, or .u, are blockchain-based domain names that function as human-readable identifiers for crypto wallets, web3 websites, and apps. Unlike traditional DNS domains (like .com or .info), which are managed by centralized registrars and require annual renewal fees, Web3 domains are stored in your crypto wallet as digital assets (NFTs) and are fully owned by you.

They can’t be taken away, don’t require renewals, and are yours for life. No middlemen, no annual fees. (.eth excluded)

Key Uses and Benefits of Web3 Domains:

  • True Ownership – Once purchased, Web3 domains belong to you forever, with no renewal costs. (.eth excluded)

  • Crypto Transactions: Web3 domains replace long, error-prone wallet addresses with simple names like “matt.crypto,” making it easier to send and receive over 300 cryptocurrencies.

  • Web3 Login: Use your Web3 domain to log into dApps and Web3 platforms without relying on third parties.

  • Web3 Websites: Build and host content on decentralized storage networks like IPFS. View them natively on Brave and Opera.

  • Web3 Profiles & Identity: Build a UD.me profile that showcases your digital assets, social links, pfp and highlights your onchain achievements.

  • Messaging & Group Chat: Domains can be used for secure, end-to-end encrypted messaging and group chat (via badge ownership) while serving as your unique onchain identity.

What Blockchains are Unstoppable Web3 Domains Minted On?

Unstoppable Web3 domains are minted (the process of turning your domain into a blockchain-based asset) across multiple blockchains including:

  • Polygon

  • Ethereum (ERC-71)

  • Solana

  • Base

  • Sonic

You can explore which domain extensions are minted on each supported blockchain here.

When managing a Domain on our website, we cover the gas fees for all blockchains except Ethereum.

Where can I use my Unstoppable Web3 domain?

Unstoppable Web3 domains can be used across hundreds of applications including Brave Browser, Trust Wallet, Blockchain.com, Crypto.com, MetaMask and many more.

Do Web3 domains resolve in browsers like traditional / Web2 / DNS domains?

Web3 domains can resolve in select supported browsers—like Brave and Opera—thanks to direct integrations. While they don’t currently resolve in all traditional browsers by default, the landscape is evolving quickly. Some Web3 TLDs, such as .brave, plan to apply for ICANN approval in the upcoming 2026 gTLD round. If approved, they’ll gain full DNS functionality, like universal browser resolution, website hosting, and email, all while still retaining their onchain benefits. For now, you can download our extension for domain resolution on Chrome & Firefox.

How do I safely store my Web3 Domains?

You can choose to store your Web3 Domains in a self-custody wallet (like Trust or MetaMask) that you control, or in a custodial wallet linked to your Unstoppable Domains account. Every account automatically includes a custodial wallet behind the scenes. Read more about the benefits of custody vs self-custody.

Once claimed to your own self-custody wallet, your Unstoppable domain is stored in your crypto wallet and fully managed via smart contracts. Any changes—like updates, transfers, or feature toggles—require a signed transaction from the wallet that owns the domain. If another wallet tries to manage it, they’ll receive an error prompting the correct wallet to sign.

Once a domain is minted and stored within your self-custody wallet, Unstoppable Domains has no control over your domain(s) and cannot block or restrict any access to the domain. You own the private keys of the wallet storing your domain, and nobody will be able to take your domain away from you.
